358/2 Days fully decompiled, opening the door to a PC port
358/2 Days is finally fully decompiled, though it is not playable yet. TheGamer reported the milestone on September 28, calling it the most significant step the game has ever taken toward a proper modern release. The news surfaced via r/KingdomHearts, where user nf6429 explained why the moment matters, noting the repository is 100 percent linked.
Freed from DS emulation, the game can now be reworked in ways emulators never allowed. Per nf6429, character models and environments can be replaced with PS2-grade assets and full 360-degree controls can be added, since polygon-count limits of the handheld no longer apply. TheGamer notes it previously covered a fan-made port attempt at the same game, making this decompilation the deeper breakthrough: a base future ports and mods can build on rather than a recreation of the DS build.
The context is a game Square Enix has kept official only as cutscene compilations. The 2009 DS original filled the narrative gap leading into Kingdom Hearts 2, following Roxas, Axel, and Xion through their year in Organization XIII, but its limited polygon count, cramped aspect ratio, and camera held it back, per TheGamer. A full source match gives fans the path to the playable version the remaster collections never included.
This is a community decompilation, not an official re-release. But its timing lands similarly: the Roxas and Xion story feeds directly into Kingdom Hearts IV, dated late 2027, so a real route back to the DS chapter is pre-KH4 homework made playable.
